Veterans & Military Families · Tokyo · Yokohama · Osaka
English-language mental health care for U.S. veterans, active duty service members, and military families — led by a doctoral psychologist and former VA Compensation & Pension Examiner. We accept the VA Foreign Medical Program and TRICARE Overseas.
Dr. Tyson Furr is a licensed doctoral psychologist who served as a VA Compensation & Pension (C&P) Examiner — conducting the clinical evaluations the Department of Veterans Affairs uses to assess service connection and disability ratings. He also holds VA certification in Prolonged Exposure for PTSD and EMDRIA-approved EMDR training. This means your care is led by someone who understands not just how to treat what you've been through, but how the VA system evaluates and documents it.
What We Offer
Whether you are managing a service-connected condition, seeking clarity through assessment, or working through something that has been with you a long time — we are here.
Trauma & PTSD
Two of the most evidence-supported treatments for PTSD available — both offered at our Tokyo practice. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and Prolonged Exposure are VA-endorsed protocols with decades of research supporting their effectiveness for combat trauma, MST, and other service-related experiences. Dr. Furr is certified in both.
Depression & Anxiety
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), mindfulness-informed approaches, and personalized strategies to restore motivation, reduce overwhelm, and rebuild daily functioning. We address depression, generalized anxiety, panic, and the particular weight that comes with military service and life overseas.
Relationships & Healing
Military service — and the transitions that surround it — puts significant strain on relationships. We support veterans and family members working through the impacts of emotional, relational, or physical abuse: rebuilding trust, improving communication, establishing healthy boundaries, and understanding patterns that formed under pressure.
Assessment
Comprehensive evaluations for ADHD, cognitive concerns, TBI-related sequelae, autism spectrum, and learning differences. Testing produces documentation useful for VA claims, accommodation requests, treatment planning, and personal clarity. Our reports are accepted by the VA, schools, employers, and international institutions.
Why This Matters
Most mental health providers are excellent clinicians. Fewer understand how the VA evaluates what they document. That gap costs veterans.
A Compensation & Pension examination is the clinical evaluation the VA uses to determine whether a condition is service-connected and how severely it affects a veteran's functioning. These evaluations directly shape disability ratings — and the benefits that follow.
Dr. Furr conducted these examinations for the Department of Veterans Affairs. He knows the criteria the VA applies, the language that matters in documentation, and the common gaps that cause claims to be underrated or denied — not because the veteran's condition isn't real, but because the clinical record didn't capture it fully.
This knowledge does not mean we advocate for a particular outcome. We document what is clinically true — accurately, completely, and in the language the VA understands. For veterans in Japan navigating claims, appeals, or nexus letters, this distinction is significant.
Diagnostic impressions are written with knowledge of how the VA assesses functional impairment — not just diagnostic labels, but what those conditions actually mean for daily life, work, and relationships.
When a veteran needs documentation establishing a connection between current symptoms and military service, our clinical records and letters are informed by direct knowledge of what the VA needs to see.
We can provide clinical documentation and consultation that supports ongoing VA claims or appeals — particularly for PTSD, depression, anxiety, TBI sequelae, and MST-related conditions.
Because the VA has no facilities in Japan, veterans must navigate FMP. Our experience with VA systems means we can help bridge that gap — in the clinical record and in practical guidance.
Getting Started
The process is more straightforward than most veterans expect. Here is how it works from Japan.
For FMP: you need a VA-rated service-connected disability and a need for care in Japan related to that condition. For TRICARE: confirm your plan type and update your address in DEERS. Not sure where you stand? Contact us — we help veterans sort this out regularly.
For FMP: request your FMP Benefits Authorization Letter from the VA (Japan toll-free: 00531-13-0871 / U.S. & Canada: 877-345-8179). For TRICARE Prime: obtain a referral from your Primary Care Manager. For TRICARE Select: confirm your benefits — referral requirements are more flexible.
Reach out with your authorization details or insurance information. We will verify your coverage, explain what services apply to your situation, and schedule an initial consultation at a time that works for you — in-person in Tokyo, Yokohama, or Osaka, or via telehealth where authorized.
Many FMP beneficiaries pay upfront and are reimbursed by the VA. We provide complete clinical documentation to support your claims. TRICARE billing is handled directly where possible. We guide you through every step — so the system doesn't become another thing you have to fight.
Coverage
We work with both programs and are experienced in navigating overseas authorization and documentation requirements.
VA Foreign Medical Program
FMP covers eligible veterans living or traveling outside the U.S. for care related to VA-rated service-connected disabilities. With no VA facilities in Japan, FMP is the pathway for most veterans here. Covered services include psychotherapy, psychiatric evaluation, and neuropsychological testing when related to service-connected conditions.
Veterans typically pay upfront and receive reimbursement. We provide complete documentation for claims.
Japan: 00531-13-0871 US/Canada: 877-345-8179TRICARE Overseas Program
TRICARE Overseas Program (TOP) provides coverage for active duty service members, retirees, and eligible family members abroad. Plans include Prime Overseas and Select Overseas. Mental health services — including psychotherapy, trauma treatment, and psychological assessment — are covered when medically necessary and properly authorized.
Prime plans typically require a PCM referral. Select plans offer more flexibility. We assist with prior authorization documentation.
